Follow These Tips
1. Drive Smart:
Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33% at highway speeds and by 5% around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money.
2. Keep It Clean:
Don't treat your vehicle like an empty closet or suitcase. It's a car, not a storage device. An extra 100lbs in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2%. The reduction is based on the percentage of weight relative to the vehicles weight and effects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.
3. Keep Tires Filled:
Tire pressure and inflation is crucial. Under inflated tires can add 6% to your fuel consumption, which could easily translate into burning an extra gallon of gas with every fill up if you're getting around 20 MPG.

4. Avoid Excessive Idling:
Idling can consume a quarter to half gallon of fuel per hour, depending on engine size and air conditioner use. Turn off your engine when the vehicle is parked. It only takes a few seconds worth of fuel to restart your vehicle.

Living in the New England area, I am guilty of idling in the winter time. You may see a drop in fuel with car starter use to heat up your vehicle. In this case you have to pick your poison, a few extra gallons of fuel or braving the cold air.
5. Use Cruise Control:
Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and,in most cases, will save gas. DO NOT use cruise control during bad weather situations as your speed may need to vary to prevent hydroplaning. It's better to save your vehicle than a little fuel.
6. Observe the Speed Limit:
We all have places we need to be. While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy range at a different speed, gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 50 mph.

You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 50 mph is like paying an additional $0.24 per gallon of gas.
7. Avoid Tailgating:
Following too closely to the driver in front of you effects your driving patterns. You cannot see what they see and do not know what they are going to do. Their light braking leads to heavy braking for you. Keeping distance between you and the vehicle in front of you allows gradual braking and prevents the necessity of acceleration when it can be avoided.
8. Avoid Rush Hour:
No explanation needed, is there? You could also try car pooling...
