How To Figure Out Your MPG |
Most newer vehicles have some sort of display unit in the vehicle to let you know your MPG. A few of them also suggest distance you can drive till the tank runs out. But not every car does this. Don't have an on board information display to suggest how many miles per gallon you're receiving. Don't fret, it's an easy calculation you can do on your cell phone or any calculator. To start, you will need to go to any gas station and completely fill up your gas tank. BEFORE you drive away from the gas station, reset your Trip Odometer. It should be a little button inside your gauge area (The trip is best used to calculate mileage in between oil changes, but it's fine to reset for now since most oil changes put sticker reminders on your windshield). Now comes the fun part, just drive around how you normally would for up to a week or however long it takes you to go through at least a full tank of gas. I personally like to get it lower to less than a quarter tank of gas. Now go back to any gas station and completely fill up your gas tank again. This is where the math comes in. On the pump, you'll want to make note of how many gallons it took to fill up your vehicle. Let's say it took 10.352 gallons. Now you want to go inside your car and make note of how many miles you put on your car since you last filled up. Let's say you drove 286 miles. You take the miles you drove, divide it by how many gallons you put in, and your answer would equal how many miles per gallon you receive. Example: 286 miles / 10.352 gallons = 27.6 MPG Note: Excessive idling (as noted above) can alter your MPG without you noticing as your car is burning fuel without even moving. So if you use a car starter in the winter but try calculating your MPG, your number may seem significantly low for the distance you've traveled. Try to calculate MPG without idling or during warmer weather. |
