Front View:
The first thing you'll notice is the new taller front grille, giving the SUV a more dominant look while coming down the road. Also smaller more inlet fog lights help with aerodynamics and that aggressive appeal.

Front Quarter: The stance between the two generations are very similar, other than the small visual differences, you might not be able to tell them apart.

Side View: The 2014 has slightly less of a "box" appeal to it, it's more rounded helping with aerodynamics. You'll also notice the subtle difference in tail lights. The outgoing model has a triangular side while the new model looks similar to a butterfly wing.

Rear View: Following the two vehicles, the new models continue that dominent presence by adding a wider cargo hatch for loading and unloading. The tail lights are also slightly wider helping overall visibility and safety.

Hatch Opening: The new power lift gate on the 2014 opens and closes with just the press of a button. Unlike most other power gates, you can open and close the new gate like a normal non-power one if it's going to slow for your liking. It also has height memory settings. So if you have a low roof in your garage but need to open the hatch, you can set it to open at a certain height as to not hit the ceiling.

Interior: The interior you'll notice is much like the Impreza's. This is not by accident, but by design. Often criticized for it's interiors, Subaru is pushing simplicity and function over a "wow" factor. You're not in a space ship, you're driving a vehicle. The high quality feel of the interior puts all that "wow" factor necessity to a rest. And most importantly, it's functional and well organized.

Transmission: The difference in automatic transmissions in particular is the greatest leap for the Foresters. The old model was a 4-Speed automatic that only achieved 27mpg highway. The new 6-Speed CVT acheives 32mpg highway on the 2.5i and 28mph highway on the 2.0XT (250hp Turbo) models.

Gauges: The new gauges are very elegant, providing useful information without having to veer your eyes far from the road.

Headlights: Adding more aggressive styling, the new headlights closely resemble that of the current genertion Impreza's. Just adds more to that aggressive look and steers away from the often described "bland styling."

Wheels: The wheels are still 5-spoke across all models. There isn't much option here, but there doesn't need to be. The XT model's have similar appearance for their rims but actually have black paint accents to give it the sporty feel.

Doors: One of the best but most passed over features of the new Foresters is the "sill-less" door design. On the left you notice the black back runs along the length of the car. On the right you see the door extends to the bottom of the vehicle. This prevents dirt from getting onto your pants when you enter or exit the vehicle as the black molding goes away from the car when you open the door.

Pillars: The 2014 Foresters also highly improve visibility. One of the best examples is moving the A-pillar forward a few inches and moving the mirror from the pillar to the door. While sitting in the Forester, you can really experience the open feel. |
